Eagles Advance at USC Upstate Fall Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On the second day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic, the Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team had a doubles pair and singles competitor advance to the main draw finals. The doubles tandem of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) moved into the final round of 'A' doubles, while freshman Naomi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) will compete for the 'C' singles title.
Play opened with two rounds of singles action. Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) opened singles play for the Eagles against Ayano Tanaka of Kennesaw State. Rolle took the first set, 6-3, but Tanaka came-from-behind to take the match winning the next two sets. Also competing in 'A' singles, Ali Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) won her quarterfinal round and took on a Kennesaw State opponent, falling in straight sets to Vera Shkundina. Beavers dropped a long battle to Campbell's Lisa Sutton, falling in three sets in the quarterfinal round.
Competing in the back draw of 'B' singles, Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) defeated teammate Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) in the semifinal round. Kitchen will challenge for the consolation title against Agatha Palider of Kennesaw State.
In the final singles draw, after defeating Wofford's Katie Thornton, 6-2, 6-2, Bollaci ousted Presbyterian College's Lindsay Krause, 6-3, 6-0, to advance into the final round. Bollaci will face Mackenzie Swindall of Kennesaw State in the final. Also in the 'C' draw, Courtney Chaney (McDonough, Ga.) picked up a win over Caitlyn Lawrence of USC Aiken, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 to move into the final round of the back draw. Chaney will take on Lucia Leahy of Presbyterian College.
In the one round of doubles contested on Saturday, Georgia Southern's Beavers and Garrido downed Kennesaw State's Shkundina and Tanaka, 8-4, in the semifinal round. The Eagle duo will take on Sutton and Borislava Nikolova of Campbell in the final. In 'B' doubles, two Eagle tandems faced off against one another as Sydney Brown (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Chaney defeated Bollaci and Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.), 8-5. Brown and Chaney will play for the consolation title against Wofford's Julia Paulson and Cathrine Sarnqvist.
The Eagles will close out the season-opening tournament on Sunday. Action will begin at 8 a.m.
