Eagles Return Home to Host Winthrop on Sunday

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer team returns home to Eagle Field to play host to Winthrop on Sunday, September 19, at noon, after playing the last four games on the road.
The match against Winthrop is the Eagles' first home game since downing USC Upstate 4-3 in the season opener. Georgia Southern went 1-2-1 on the road trip, beating North Florida 2-1 on a pair of goals by senior Austin Steele (Kennesaw, Ga.) on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
With the two goals, Steele climbed into a tie for the team lead with sophomore Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.) with two on the season. Six Eagles have scored this season, giving Georgia Southern eight goals in five games.
Junior transfer goalkeeper Ryan Platt (Preston, England) had a breakout game against Radford, a game which ended in a 1-1 tie in double-overtime. Platt recorded 12 saves, climbing to the top of the Southern Conference over the road trip with 30 saves on the season.
Winthrop enters the match with a 2-3-1 record after falling on the road to East Tennessee State 2-0 in its last contest.
Five players have each scored once for Winthrop, led by Miquel Casajuana who has a goal and two assists. Enrique Miranda handles the goalkeeping duties for Winthrop and has 14 saves with six goals allowed in five matches.
Georgia Southern has faced Winthrop 15 times throughout its history, trailing 8-5-2 in the all-time series. In the last four matches, GS has posted a 2-1-1 record. The Eagles lost to Winthrop in the first meeting, falling 2-0 on October 24, 1981.
Following the Georgia Southern Women's Soccer game against Coastal Carolina, which begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, the men's and women's soccer programs are teaming up to put on a Little Eagles Skills Clinic. The clinic will feature players from both programs teaching children, under the age of 14, different drills.
