Teaford Selected to 2010 Pan American Qualifying Team

DURHAM, N.C. – Former Eagle pitcher Everett Teaford has been selected to the 2010 Pan American Qualifying Team as announced by USA Baseball recently. The 24-man team will compete in the COPABE Pan American Games Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for Oct. 1-10 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Drafted in the 12th round of the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Royals, Teaford wrapped up his fifth professional playing season competing for the Double-AA Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Teaford logged 99.0 innings, leading the team in strikeouts with 113 to tally a 3.36 ERA. The left-handed pitcher finished the season with a 14-3 record.
The Kansas City Royals led all Major League clubs with six players from its farm system named to the team. The team is comprised of players not currently on 40-man Major League rosters. Ernie Young will manage the team in Puerto Rico, and will be joined on the coaching staff by hitting coach Leon Durham, pitching coach Kirk Champion, and assistant coaches Jay Bell, Roly de Armas and Carlos Tosca.
The Pan American Qualifying Team will first gather in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex where it will train from Sept. 25-28. The team will compete in the qualifying tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the 13-team tournament will feature top Pan Am talent, including host Puerto Rico, Canada, Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela. The top eight teams from the qualifier will advance to the 2011 Pan American Games baseball tournament next October in Mexico, and the top six will also qualify for the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup, tentatively scheduled for next fall.
In his Georgia Southern career, Teaford currently ranks sixth in career starts with 48 and second in strikeouts with 353, and is tied for eighth in wins with 26 and seventh with 348.1 innings pitched. The 2004-06 letterwinner also ranks in the top-10 in three season categories. His string of seven consecutive victories in 2006 ranks eighth in that category, while the standout ranks sixth and ninth, respectively, with 122 strikeouts in 2006 and 118 in 2005.
