Women's Soccer Loses 2-1 To Kennesaw State On Penalty Kick

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After working to even the match against Kennesaw State, Georgia Southern gave up a penalty kick which lifted the Owls (3-3-1) to a 2-1 victory over the Eagles (2-4-0) Sunday (September 12) in the final round of the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Alma Gardarsdottir scored in the seventh minute, giving Kennesaw State a 1-0 lead on an assist from Brittany Vining and Tasia Williams. Georgia Southern spent the next 45 minutes working to find the equalizer. It came in the 51st minute when Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) gathered a deflected shot and put it in the back of the net for her third goal of the season, tying the game 1-1.
Just over 15 minutes later, Kennesaw State was on the attack when the Eagles committed a foul in the penalty box, giving the Owls a penalty kick. Gardarsdottir pushed the ball past Georgia Southern goalkeeper Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) for her second goal of the game and the game-winner in the 67th minute.
Merson made six saves during the match, as the Owls out-shot the Eagles 16-8. Georgia Southern put five shots on goal, including two off the foot of Oland, forcing Staci Pugh to make four saves for the Owls.
