STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer Team wraps up exhibition play Saturday (August 28) against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. at Eagle Field.
The Eagles are 2-0 in exhibition matches this season, out-scoring Mercer and Lander 5-1. Five different Eagles have scored a goal this season, while Georgia Southern goalkeepers have held their opponents scoreless in three out of four halves.
After knocking off Mercer 1-0 on a goal by Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.), the Eagles scored three second half goals to overcome a 1-0 deficit to beat 2009 Peach Belt Champions, Lander, 4-1 Wednesday (Aug. 25).
Georgia Southern's freshmen proved they will have an impact this season, combining for two goals and an assist. Defender Drew Ruggles (Manassas, Va.) scored the tying goal against Lander, and midfielder Hunter Norton (Evans, Ga.) scored what proved to be the game winner.
Junior transfer Ryan Platt (Preston, England) has started both matches in goal for Georgia Southern, while Neal Bates (Watkinsville, Ga.) and Bradley Bugg (Athens, Ga.) have each seen action during the second half.
The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped their first exhibition match 2-1 to Marshall, and played Limestone to a scoreless draw. Freshman Chijioke Akujuobe scored Gardner-Webb's only goal on an unassisted run in the 59th minute to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead against Marshall.
Gardner-Webb has used two different goalkeepers in its two matches. Senior Trent Kozman played 90 minutes against Marshall, making six saves, but he couldn't hold the lead. Junior Adam Garcia played the full game against Limestone, making three saves in the draw.
Georgia Southern has matched up against Gardner-Webb five times during the regular season, with the Runnin' Bulldogs holding a 3-2 edge in the series. The first contest went to overtime in 2004, with Gardner-Webb winning 2-1 at home. The Eagles have won two of the last three contests, but fell 5-2 last season.
