Men?s Soccer Opens Season With Exhibition Against Mercer

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer Team will open the 2010 season Saturday, August 21 at home against Mercer University in an exhibition game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Eagle Field.
For the Eagles, the exhibition match is one of three games before they officially begin the regular season at home against USC Upstate on Saturday, September 1.
Georgia Southern has six seniors on the squad, including Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.), who scored a goal and was tied for the team lead with two assists last season. Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.), Matt Crowell (St. Augustine, Fla.), Aleksandar Tomic (Sydney, Australia), Rich Heyer (Tupelo, Miss.) and Austin Steele (Kennesaw, Ga.) each scored a goal in 2009.
The Eagles have played Mercer 42 times in regular season contests, dating back to 1980, and lead the overall series 23-19. In the past six seasons, the series is tied 3-3 with three games going into overtime.
Mercer posted a 7-11-2 record in 2009, led by senior Ian Cameron, who scored seven goals with four assists as a junior. Sophomore Richie Edmondson also scored two goals and had four assists.
