Eagle Golf Placed In NCAA Atlanta Regional

STATESBORO, Ga. – As announced by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee Monday evening, the Georgia Southern men's golf team garnered its second consecutive invitation into NCAA postseason play. The Eagles were selected as one of 81 teams to contend for the national title in the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.

“It is always exciting to earn a Regional bid and this year is no different for the team,” said Eagle head coach Larry Mays. “The team has worked hard all season to get to this point. The field will be a challenge, but we still have our best golf in front of us. Three new faces to NCAA play will make the trip representing Georgia Southern and we are excited about this opportunity.”

Six sites will host 54-hole regional tournaments, May 20-22, with the Eagles placed in the NCAA Atlanta Regional in Alpharetta, Georgia. The Eagles' postseason invitation marks the second consecutive and eighth bid in 10 years.

Led by the No.1 seed Oklahoma State, Georgia Southern will compete with 13 of the nation's best teams at the Crabapple Golf Club, a Tom Fazio designed par 70, 7,182-yard championship-caliber golf course. Joining GS in the regional will be Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Arkansas, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Furman, Brigham Young, Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and Towson.

The low five teams in each region along with the low individual not on the selected teams will advance to the NCAA Championship to be held in Chattanooga, Tennessee from June 1-6. The title will be determined on The Honors Course.

The postseason nod marks the ninth overall berth in program history with GS looking for its 14th NCAA Championship appearance. In 2009, the Eagles finished 10th in the NCAA Sorrento Regional.

The 2010 season has witnessed four 'Top 5' finishes including a crown at the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate in September and a second-place finish at the Southern Conference Championship in April.

Returning from the 2009 Regional team will be senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and junior Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.). Fulford holds the team's third lowest stroke average at 73.76 after setting the competitive course record at The Country Club of South Carolina in the fall.

Making the trip with Blondell and Fulford will be All-Conference honoree Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.), All-Freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) and Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.). Zabroske leads the team with a 72.33 stroke average. The senior holds four 'Top 5' finishes and an extra 'Top 10' placement. Freshman Sander comes in second on the team with a 73.60 scoring average, while Deal rounds out the traveling squad with a 74.09.

“As a program, Georgia Southern has a long tradition of reaching postseason play,” stated Mays. “We hope to keep the tradition growing and advance to the NCAA Championship and head to Chattanooga.”
