KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Georgia Southern men's and women's soccer teams posted a team grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 academic year. Georgia Southern was the only Southern Conference school recognized on the list for both teams receiving the award.
GS is among 102 schools (Division I, II, III, NAIA) that had both their men's and women's programs recognized with the award.
This is the first honor for the men's program since 2002. For the academic year, the men's team posted a 3.12 GPA. During the fall season, two student-athletes were listed on the President's List, including Mark Beville, and seven appeared on the Dean's List.
Beville was named the 2008-09 Georgia Southern Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Beville graduated with a 4.0 GPA in Business and went on to work on his doctorate at the University of Florida.
“This is a great academic achievement for the team. I'm really pleased with the hard work that they've put into their studies over the course of the last year,” said head coach Kevin Kennedy. “This is also a testament to all of the support that our athletes receive through Matt Lombardi and our office of Student-Athlete services.”
The women's team had two student-athletes named to the President's List at Georgia Southern for carrying a 4.0 GPA for Fall 2008, while three were named to the Dean's List. For the academic year, the team posted a 3.0 GPA.
“I'm pleased to see our team get academic recognition with this honor,” said head coach Ashley Hart. “They've really worked hard over the past year and it's nice to see them recognized for it. We are fortunate to have a great Student-Athlete Services department at Georgia Southern that helps our student-athletes excel in the classroom.”
In total, 145 men's programs around the country were recognized, while 339 women's programs were named to the list.
