Eagle Golf Set to Compete in Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

STATESBORO, Ga. - Coming off a solid finish at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, the Georgia Southern golf team is set to participate in the 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The two-day tournament takes place on Monday, March 8 and Tuesday, March 9 at the historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States, the Palmetto Golf Club is a par-70, 6,617-yard course. The 18-team field will open play on Monday with the first two rounds of action and conclude with the final 18 on Tuesday, March 9.
“It has been awhile since the team has participated in this tournament, but we are excited to go back and enjoy two days of solid golf,” said head coach Larry Mays. “It's a great tournament that's run well by USC Aiken and is played on a great little golf course.”
Featured in the 18-team field are: Akron, Clemson, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Mercer, Presbyterian, UNC Wilmington, Winthrop, Wofford, Virginia and host USC Aiken.
Host institution USC Aiken returns in defense of its 12th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate title. The Pacers have won four of the past five titles.
The tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start.
Representing Georgia Southern in the tournament will be Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.), Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, Ga.), Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria), Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) and Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.)
The Eagles are coming off a 10th place finish at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in which redshirt-freshman Sander recorded his first 'Top 5' collegiate finish, tying for fifth-place. Sander led GS with two rounds of 1-under 71s and capped the tournament at 1-over par 217.
“Heading into the tournament, we have played in two tough tournaments on two tough golf courses,” stated Mays. “We are looking forward to getting up there and competing well. The main thing we need to focus on is getting that fourth score each day. So far, we haven't gotten that solid fourth score and if we can do that, we will be in great shape and have a great tournament.”
