Lady Eagles Fall to Lady Mocs in Semis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Georgia Southern cut the score to four points midway through the second half, but could not overcome a halftime deficit as the Lady Eagles fell 60-49 to Chattanooga in the semifinal round of the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament. Georgia Southern finished the season with the best record, 19-12, since 2002-03.
This was the fifth meeting between the conference schools in the SoCon Tournament. UTC now leads 3-2 in the series. Chattanooga advanced to the championship game for the 13th time and will play the winner of No. 2 Samford/No. 3 Appalachian State on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
Georgia Southern opened the contest pulling out with a 10-3 lead using two buckets in the paint from J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) as well as jumpers from Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) and Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.). Whitney added a pair of free throws to the board before UTC pulled out in front, 17-12, using a quartet of three-pointers and a pair of free throws.
The Lady Mocs continued to widen their advantage, pulling away with a 12-point lead outscoring GS 10-3 over the next seven minutes. The Lady Eagles cut the score back to single digits using a jumper from Ogburn and fastbreak layup from Meredyth Frye (Fredericksburg, Va.), but UTC rallied to close the half with a 34-23 halftime lead.
Georgia Southern opened the second frame on a strong suit, using a 13-4 run to cut the lead to four points with 13:03 to play as Whitney and Frye nailed back-to-back treys. The Lady Mocs pushed their advantage back to eight points, but GS struck again. Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) connected on a jumper before Ogburn converted a pair of free throws while UTC missed a field goal and provided a miscue, allowing GS to slice the score back to four points, 44-40, with 9:41 left.
But the Lady Mocs put together a 16-4 run over the next eight minutes, giving UTC its largest lead of the game, 60-44. Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) closed out the game for the Lady Eagles going 3-of-4 from the charity stripe and Frye hit a jumper at the buzzer for the final score, 60-49.
Ogburn paced GS with 13 points with Frye following with 11. Shanara Hollinquest led all scorers with 17 points as UTC closed the game with three players in double figures. Jenaya Wade-Fray posted 13, while Kayla Christopher added 10 in the win. Chattanooga hit nine three-pointers to Georgia Southern's three and outrebounded the Lady Eagles, 41-31.
