Lady Eagles Begin Quest for SoCon Tournament Title Saturday

STATESBORO, GA – A 77-73 regular season ending win over Appalachian State secured a first-round bye for the Georgia Southern women's basketball team in the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament. The Lady Eagles earned the fifth seed in the 11-team tournament and will face No. 4 seeded College of Charleston in a quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 6 at 9 a.m. in the Bojangles Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
First and quarterfinal rounds will take place at the Bojangles Arena with semifinal and final rounds contested at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
The winner of Saturday morning's contest will face No. 1 Chattanooga at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.
Georgia Southern (18-11 13-7) concluded the regular season winning 11 of its last 14 games, including a five game win streak to cap the season. GS and College of Charleston split the regular season series this season, with each team winning on the road.
A pair of seniors have paced the Georgia Southern offense all season. Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) led the team with 11.4 points per game on average with J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) following, also in double figures, with 10.3 points per game. Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the team in rebounding with 5.3 per game with Ogburn securing 4.9 rpg, respectively.
College of Charleston (19-10, 13-7) earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament via a tiebreak with Georgia Southern. The Cougars were led by junior guard Tonia Gerty with 11.0 points per game. Gerty earned Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the SoCon All-Conference Team by both the leagues 11 coaches and the SoCon Sports Media Association.
Three other Cougars averaged double figure scoring on the season, while Deidra Jones leads the team in rebounding with 7.1.
Georgia Southern will look for its third SoCon Tournament Title this weekend with the first two coming in the inaugural seasons of joining the conference in 1993 and 1994. Holding a 20-15 all-time SoCon Tournament record, the Lady Eagles' last championship game appearance dates back to the 2004-05 season when GS suffered a double overtime loss to Western Carolina, 97-95.
The following represents Georgia Southern's tournament breakdown: opening round, 2-1; quarterfinals, 10-7; semifinals-6-3; and finals, 2-4. The Lady Eagles suffered a tough opening round loss last season to Elon.
