North Florida Holds Lead After Two Rounds at 31st Annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Joe Monte trimmed his opening round score by five strokes to lead the Eagles during the second round of the 31st Annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational Saturday (March 20). Monte launched a 3-under par 69 using five birdies, including three on the back nine, to match his lowest round of the season. The three-day tournament is being contested on the par 72, 6,962 yard Forest Heights Country Club.
North Florida held onto first place posting a second-round 279 to go along with its opening round 285. The Osprey stand at 12-under par (564) and best second-place Auburn by seven strokes heading into the final round on Sunday. The Tigers shaved five strokes off Friday's opening round to climb two spots on the leaderboard to second place. Virginia slipped into third place with a 287 third round for a 573 two-day total and lead fourth-place North Carolina State by two strokes. The Wolfpack moved into fourth at 575, while Mississippi dropped two spots into fifth-place at 577.
North Florida's Kevin Phelan owned the day's lowest round shooting a 6-under 66. Phelan began the day tied for fourth and currently holds a two stroke lead in first place at 136 with one round left to play. Fellow teammate J.C. Horne matched his opening round 69 on the second day to stand in second on the individual leaderboard.
Host institution Georgia Southern improved on its first round score by three shots with a 289. The Eagles stand in sole possession of eighth place at 581, four strokes out of a top five finish.
“We played a solid round today and I'm proud of the team for performing well when the pin placements were much tougher today,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Joe [Monte] came out and had a great round for us. Looking at the team standings, if we can come out tomorrow with a strong round, we are capable of climbing a couple spots on the leaderboard.”
Monte (Chantilly, Va.) showed the most improvement on the second day. Consecutive birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 erased a bogey on two as the junior took the turn at 1-under. Birdies opened and closed the back nine as Monte improved on the final nine holes by five strokes from Friday for a second round three-under par 69. With the day's third lowest round, Monte jumped from T36 to T13.
After leading the Eagles on the opening day, senior Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) owned one of the team's second lowest rounds carding a 73. Zabroske posted birdies on Nos. 7 and 14, but three bogeys on the front nine hindered the senior who finished at 1-over. The senior shares 23rd-place entering the final round with a 145.
Fellow classmate Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) added two strokes to his opening round even-par 72 and stands in a tie for 30th. Deal birdied three holes on the day with two coming on the front nine for a two-day total, 146.
Redshirt-freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) got the day rolling for Georgia Southern opening with a birdie on three. Sander then launched an eagle on the par 4, 337-yard hole five to claim a 3-under tally heading into No. 6. Sander ended the round with a birdie on 18, a hole he triple bogeyed in the opening round. The redshirt-freshman finished the round at 1-over 73 and stands in a tie for 38th at 147.
Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) followed suit of his opening round 74 with a matching round on day two. Eight consecutive pars opened the front nine for Fulford who bogeyed nine to make the turn at 1-over. Fulford erased one of two bogeys on the back nine with a birdie on the final hole. The senior stands in a tie for 49th-place with a 148 two-day total.
Individual Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) stands in a tie for third-place trimming his opening round by three shots. Blondell owns two under-par scores through two rounds with a 71 and 69, respectively. The junior posted an almost perfect round with five birdies, one bogey and 12 pars. Blondell moved from a ninth-place tie into a third-place tie with Mississippi's Jonathan Randolph.
The final round of action begins Sunday morning at 8 a.m. Paired with Georgia Southern for the final round will be LSU and Vanderbilt. The Eagles tee off first beginning on the front nine.
