Eagle Softball Splits with UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Southern opened Southern Conference play with an extra innings win against UNC Greensboro 4-1 in eight innings. However, the Eagles were unable to pick up the sweep, dropping a 3-2 decision in the second game..
The Eagles trailed 1-0 heading to the sixth inning of game one before Kelly Burnett (Boynton Beach, Fla.) hit a home run to left field, her first of the season, to tie the game. In the top of the eighth, Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) hit a double to center and Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) would reach safely on a fielder's choice, which advanced Smith to third. Russo stole second, and the throw ended up in the outfield, which allowed Smith to score. Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the throw. Mackenzie Williams' (Baxley, Ga.) single through the left side plated Side. Williams stole third, then scored on a wild pitch.
Southern Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) picked up her seventh win of the season after pitching eight innings, allowing one run on four hits, none earned, while striking out six batters to bring her season total to a team high, 64 strikeouts. Her ERA has now dropped to a 1.64 and she has not allowed an earned run in her last 16 innings pitched.
In Game 2, Georgia Southern trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the sixth. Russo hit a homer to right field to tie the game. Side followed Russo's home run with a home run of her own to left center to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. However, UNCG's Jordan Jewett hit the game winning two- run home run to right center, giving the Spartans a 3-2 lead and eventual win.
The Eagles return to finish their three-game SoCon series with UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m. Sunday.
