Lady Eagles Handle Catamounts for 62-48 Win

STATESBORO, GA – Senior forward J'Lisia Ogburn almost topped her season-high performance of 20 points, draining 18 Wednesday night (February 3) against the Western Carolina Catamounts. Ogburn added 10 points to her halftime total of eight to erase a one-point halftime deficit for Georgia Southern and complete a regular season sweep over the Catamounts. The senior led all scorers in the 62-48 Georgia Southern victory. Georgia Southern improved to 13-9 overall and 8-5 in Southern Conference play, while Western Carolina fell to 3-19, 2-11.
Almost perfect from the floor, Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) hit 8-of-9 shots and went 2-of-3 from the free throw line to collect her game-high 18 points. The senior Eagle finished the game with seven rebounds and one steal. Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) also added double figures to the board for the Lady Eagles, tallying 13 points with the help of six from the charity stripe. Senior Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) dished out five helpers in the win, while Navarro and Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) each added four to Georgia Southern's 20 total. Western Carolina recorded only six assists, but outrebounded the Lady Eagles, 39-26, led by Caitlin Hollifield and Kristen Feemster who each pulled down seven boards.
“I was proud of our effort in the second half. We let down about midway through the first half when they started to get physical with us producing that drought where we didn't score,” said Lady Eagle head coach Rusty Cram. “It wasn't because of bad defense, I just don't feel we were looking to score aggressively.
But we turned it up in the second half and did some good things. J'Lisia [Ogburn] played a great game for us and I thought Janay [Wilson], Jamie [Navarro] and Krista [Tate] all did a great job for us in the guards.”
For the game Georgia Southern shot 44 percent to WCU's 38 percent. Leading the Catamounts were Emily Clarke and Janae McKinney with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Clarke nailed three of WCU's four treys in the game, while Kaila'Shea Menendez connected on 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Grabbing the lead early with six unanswered points right out of the gate, Georgia Southern amassed an 11 point lead, 13-6, on Georgia Southern's lone three-pointer of the night (Navarro) with 14:43 to play in the opening frame. The Catamounts took their time closing the deficit, but used a 5-0 run midway through the first half to open a five-point ballgame, 19-14, with 9:05 on the clock.
Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.), who was one of two Lady Eagles to record three steals on the night, pushed GS back to an eight point advantage as did Ogburn, but WCU would not go quietly. Coming out of the fourth media timeout, Western Carolina used a 9-0 run sparked by back-to-back treys from Clarke, to end the half with a one-point edge over Georgia Southern, 25-24.
Western Carolina used 27 rebounds, 18 defensive, to erase its deficit and garner the halftime lead. The first half advantage marked only the sixth time this season the Catamounts lead at halftime. However, four of WCU's opponents would come back in the second half and take the win.
Coming out of the break, Geiger and Ogburn would cut Georgia Southern's deficit, but it would be Tate that put the Lady Eagles back in front permanently with a bucket at the 12:24 marker. Jumpstarted by an Ogburn bucket before, Georgia Southern put together a 10-0 run with four different Lady Eagles scoring to gather a seven-point lead, 40-33 with 10:49 to play.
A jumper from Hollifield put the Catamounts within five, but that would be the closest WCU would reach the remainder of the game. Ogburn opened the lead back to double digits connecting on an old-fashioned three-point play, 47-37, as Meredyth Frye (Fredericksburg, Va.) enduringly gave GS a double-digit advantage with her third field goal of the evening, 54-43, at the 3:52 marker. Following a McKinney basket, Geiger and Navarro combined for a 6-of-6 effort at the charity stripe over the next 30 seconds for a 17 point lead, 62-45. Catamount Jessica Jackson hit a lay-up in the paint while picking up a foul to close out the 62-48 Georgia Southern win.
Georgia Southern continues this three-game homestand welcoming Chattanooga and Samford this upcoming weekend. A 3:00 p.m. tip has been set for Saturday, February 6 against the Chattanooga Lady Mocs, while a 7:00 p.m. start is set on Monday, February 8 for the Samford Bulldogs in Hanner Fieldhouse.
