STATESBORO, GA – Georgia Southern dropped only one match in doubles and singles play combined to complete a 7-0 sweep over the Hampton Pirates Sunday morning (Feb. 21) at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Five of six singles matches were won in straight sets by the Eagles, who improved to 3-5 on the year. Hampton faltered to 1-1 with the loss.
“We played a solid match today,” said head coach Justin Miles. “We improved upon our mistakes from our last match which was positive. But we still need to stay focused and get ready for our next match.”
Only three games were dropped by GS before the doubles point was clinched by the Eagles. Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) first walked off the courts carrying an 8-1 match win with them moments before Jayraj Jadeja (London, England) and Justin Flynn (Dublin, Ireland) clinched the point with an 8-2 victory at the two seed.
With the early advantage, Georgia Southern quickly opened its lead moving into singles action with quick wins at three and five. Bekkers waved only one game in 13 for a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Edson Alves at two, while Verdam dominated Kenneth Green for a 6-1, 6-1 win. Standing at 3-0, GS clinched the match with a Garrido victory at No. 4. The sophomore downed Alvin Fludd, 6-1, 6-2, to seal the win.
With the match decision already secured, the Eagles added three more singles wins to complete the sweep. Senior Jadeja was victorious at the top singles position in a super tiebreaker before Melian Puigventos grabbed a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Gellert Varga at the two seed. Senior Flynn completed Georgia Southern's scoring with a straight set win at No.6 over Marcelo Redo.
Georgia Southern continues home court play welcoming Jacksonville on Tuesday, Feb. 23 for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference match-up.
