Lady Eagles Victorious Over Paladins, 56-46

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia Southern picked up its second straight victory and continued to press its opponents as the regular season winds down defeating Furman 56-46 Monday night (Feb. 15) in the Timmons Arena. The Lady Eagles beat Furman in all but two statistical categories for the win which pushed them to 15-11 on the year and 10-7 in Southern Conference play. Furman, meanwhile, dropped its seventh straight contest, falling to 6-20, 4-13.
Lee Stephens was held to single digits of eight points for the first time in two years when playing Georgia Southern as Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) and Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) both picked up double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Eagles used an 8-of-16 effort from three-point range to help seal the win led by Whitney and Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.), each with three.
For the game, GS shot 44 percent from the field on 19-of-43 shooting, keeping Furman to 33 percent. The Paladins added an extra four from the charity stripe, but Georgia Southern capitalized on its second chance opportunities scoring 11 points.
Georgia Southern struck first with a J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) bucket at 19:19 and GS added another four unanswered before Furman got on the board off a three-pointer by Kali Holtfreter. But GS took an 8-3 lead by the first official timeout and expanded its advantage to 11-3 as Navarro hit three free throws off a by Susan Troutman foul beyond the 3-point line. A Janay Wilson (Warner Robins, Ga.) trey handed the Lady Eagles their first double-digit lead of the contest with a bucket beyond the arc at 12:28 and a minute later Whitney hit the second trey by the visiting team, pushing the lead out to 19-5 with 11:37 remaining.
Ayanna Randolph hit two at the charity stripe for the Paladins before Williams put the Lady Eagles on top 22-7 with a three-pointer. Two minutes of scoreless play was snapped by a free throw from Kendra Berry. Wilson opened the lead back to 17 points with a jumper at 2:08 and Williams closed out the half with her second trey of the opening frame for a halftime score of 35-18.
Berry closed the deficit to 15 points with a pair of free throws to open the second half as Georgia Southern did not score until the 16:39 marker on a '3' from Whitney. The Paladins put together a 7-2 run over the next three minutes for a 40-27 score before Williams tied her career-high in three-pointers made hitting her third before the second media timeout.
The lead opened to 19 points off a fastbreak layup from Meredyth Frye (Fredericksburg, Va.) at 7:54, but Furman used an 8-0 run sparked by a Holtfreter trey to draw the tally to 50-39 with 5:29 on the clock. Ogburn snapped the run as Frye continued the GS offense pitting the score 54-39. A Paladin jumper and three-pointer cut the score to 12 points, 56-44, the smallest margin since 5:29 in the game, with 1:45 left to play. Furman's Lakyn Ledford added the final bucket of the game with 21 seconds for the final score of 56-46.
Georgia Southern returns to Statesboro to play host to Wofford on Saturday, February 20. Tip is slated for noon on Pack the House in Pink day. All fans are asked to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
