Lady Eagles Travel for Pair of Conference Games

STATESBORO, GA – As the 2009-2010 regular season winds down for Georgia Southern, the Lady Eagles hit the road for their second-to-last road trip of the season making stops at College of Charleston and Furman. GS visits the No. 2 team in the Southern Conference, Charleston, on Saturday, Feb. 13 before traveling to Furman for a Monday night match-up.
Tip inside the Carolina First Arena on Saturday is slated for 2 p.m., while tip in the Timmons Arena on Monday night is slated for 7 p.m. Georgia Southern Radio Network's Ryan Chambers will call both games for Eagle fans who can listen globally at www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com. Fans can listen to the Charleston game locally on WMCD 107.3 FM and the Furman game on Monday on WPMX 102.9 FM.
Georgia Southern (13-11, 8-7) will look to snap a two-game skid in Charleston having fallen to Chattanooga and Samford at home this past weekend. The Lady Eagles suffered a 66-47 loss to the Bulldogs Monday (Feb. 8) and will look to rebound with a win this weekend.
Continuing to pace the team this season, senior guard Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) averages 11.5 points per game and is followed by fellow classmate J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) with 10.3 ppg. Ogburn narrowly trails the team's rebounding leader, Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) who secures 5.1 boards per game, with 4.9 rpg.
College of Charleston (18-7, 12-4) enters Saturday's contest with a win over Chattanooga that moved them into a tie for second place on the Southern Conference standings. The Cougars snapped the Lady Mocs' 13-game win streak with a 62-50 win in the Carolina First Arena. The win witnessed the largest women's basketball crowd (1,039) since the opening of the new arena and the largest win over UTC in the Division I era.
Charleston presents a balanced scoring offense with four Cougars in the 10-point range. Tonia Gerty leads with 10.8 points, while Jade Hughes, Ericka Williams and Brooke Kotcella average 10.7, 10.4 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. Senior center Deidra Jones leads the team in rebounding with a 6.9 average. Saturday's conference game will mark the last home contest of the 2009-2010 season for College of Charleston as six seniors will be recognized prior to tip.

Furman (6-19, 4-12) welcomes Georgia Southern to the Timmons Arena Monday night having dropped the last six contests. The Paladins most recently suffered a 53-47 loss at Wofford (Feb. 8). Kelly O'Connor and Lee Stephens both scored 10 points for Furman, and were two of only three players in the game to reach double figures, but could not carry out the win for the Paladins. Wofford used an 8-0 run midway through the second half and Kathlyn Varno's game-high 15 points to secure the win.
For the season, Stephens leads the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game, while Lakyn Ledford paces the team in rebounding with 5.1 boards per game.
GSU leads the all-time series against Furman, 27-17 and took the first meeting this season with an overtime win, 54-50. The overtime game played marked the first for Georgia Southern since a 2007 win at Western Carolina. GS narrowly leads the series in Greenville, 10-9 and took both decisions in the 2008-09 season.
