Beeler Clinches 5-2 Eagle Win Over Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second consecutive year, the Georgia Southern Eagles have captured the Jacksonville Dolphins in a close 5-2 match. Making her collegiate dual singles match debut, freshman Allison Beeler clinched the victory for the Eagles coming from a set down to win in three sets at the six seed. Georgia Southern pushed its record to 2-1 with the win, while Jacksonville fell to 1-3.
The Eagles earned the early lead in doubles, but Jacksonville quickly tied the match in singles action. Both teams took consecutive singles wins to knot the score 2-all before GS took the next two decisions to clinch the match.
“I'm really proud of the way the team stepped up today, especially the freshmen,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “Natalie [Maffett] played strong in doubles and Allison [Beeler] competed extremely well in singles to clinch the match. The entire team stepped up and performed well in a tough road match.”
JU jumped out early in doubles action, cruising to an 8-1 decision at the top seed as Tatiana Soldatova and Eve Castaing edged Beeler (Alpahretta, Ga.) and Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) for the first win. But Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) and Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) quickly evened the fight for the doubles point with an 8-3 quest at No. 2. The junior tandem ousted Fernando Carrero and Iva Jaresova, 8-3, leaving the doubles point decision at the three seed where Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) and Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) were challenging Sara Londono and Virginia Iwinski. The Eagle pair took the match, 8-3, giving Georgia Southern the early 1-0 advantage.
Jacksonville drew even in singles with the first match as Castaing topped Rolle, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. But the Eagles retook the lead, 2-1, with a Hungerford victory at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1 over Carrero. Soldatova then rallied for the Dolphins to tie the match 2-all from the top singles position. Soldatova edged Maffett in a first set tiebreaker, 7-6(4), and took the second set, 6-1, to even the score.
But Georgia Southern charged back and took the next two matches off the courts to clinch the match decision. Competing at No. 3, senior Kegerreis walked away with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set decision over Jaresova, leaving Georgia Southern within one victory for the match.
Battling back from one set down, freshman Beeler – making her collegiate dual singles match debut – rebounded from a 3-6 first set loss to knot the match one set-all with a 6-1 second set victory. In the final third set, Londono took the first game, but Beeler took the next two games to go up a break, 2-1. Both opponents held serve the remainder of the set as Beeler served out the match at 5-4 to clinch the win for the Eagles with a 6-4 third set win.
With the team outcome already decided, Fuller completed the 5-2 final score with a three-set victory over Iwinski at the four seed. The senior Eagle took the first set, 6-3, before falling in the second, 5-7. The non-conference opponents took the match into a third set tiebreak, in which Fuller defeated Iwinski, 7-6(5) for the three set win.
Georgia Southern returns to the court with two home matches this weekend. “We are really excited to end this road trip on a high note and finally open at home this weekend,” stated Bonner. “Hopefully we can carry this same momentum into our matches this weekend.” The Eagles open the home schedule Saturday, Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. against Bethune-Cookman and welcome USC Upstate in a rescheduled match on Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.
