Team Effort keeps Georgia Southern in Front

RADFORD, Va. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team stayed in first place after day two of the Highlander Invitational. Thanks in large part to a team effort, the Eagles distanced themselves from second-place Youngstown State and the rest of the eight-team field which includes Campbell, Radford, Mount St. Mary's, Liberty, Millersville and North Carolina A&T. Georgia Southern will carries 115.5 point lead going into the final day.
"I thought we performed really well," said Head Coach Nathan Kellogg. "A lot of our kids swam faster than they did in preliminaries this morning. The biggest thing was that we raced really well, we kicked it in gear when we needed to and executed well. It was a great team effort all around. The relay teams got things going. We pride ourselves in our relays. Tonight everybody stepped up."
The relay teams ignited the Eagles from the start as the Georgia Southern "A" team, consisting of Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.), Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.) and Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.), won the 200 medley relay (1:50.21). The Georgia Southern "B" team that includes Meg Beasley (Knoxville, Tenn.), Tess Antesberger (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.), finished in seventh place (1:53.88).
Georgia Southern would add three more first-place finishes by the end of the night as Courtney Harrison (Greenville, S.C.) and Ostrom would win the 400 IM (4:40.13) and the 100 breast (1:06.66), respectively. Ostrom also competed in the 400 IM, finishing third (4:43.47).
Teammates Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada) and Emily Fell (Brunswick, Ga.) also finished behind Harrison in the 400 IM, swimming to second-(4:41.28) and seventh-place finishes (4:48.54). Harrison, Antesberger and Haundenschild finished alongside Ostrom in the 100 breast, placing second (1:07.46), fifth (1:09.52) and eighth (1:12.96), respectively.
The diving competition witnessed four Eagles place on the one-meter board. Sara Meisenhelder (Carmel, Ind.) finished fourth (214.45) while Amanda Macchio (Redding, Conn.), Alden Lynch (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Cameron Robertson (Alpharetta, Ga.) placed eighth (183.15), 10th (175.10) and 12th (138.05), respectively.
In the 100 back, Bevillard and Beasley captured fourth-(1.00.70) and eighth-place finishes (1:02.56). Mullican and Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.) placed eighth (1:01.31) and ninth (1:00.21) in the 100 fly. Stephens and Goodman recorded top-three finishes in the 200 free with Stephens swimming to a second-place finish (1:57.79) and Goodman following behind in third place (1:57.98). Pirie Humphries (Athens, Ga.) and Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.) finished eighth (2:02.69) and 14th (2:03.40).
The Eagles final first-place finish would come in the last event with the Georgia Southern "A" team of Campbell, Bevillard, Goodman and White, winning the 800 free relay (7:51.31). The Georgia Southern "B' team, consisting of Stephens, Harrison, Fell and Humphries, finished fourth (7:59.35).
The Highlander Invitational concludes Saturday afternoon with the last round of finals scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
