Swimming and Diving Leads after Day One of the Highlander Invitational

RADFORD, Va. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team wrapped up day one of the Highlander Invitational in first place with two more days of competition left at the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
"We were a bit rusty in preliminaries, but we did very well in finals," said Head Coach Nathan Kellogg. "Even as we went through the final session, we got stronger and hopefully that mentality will carry over into tomorrow's session."
That mentality led the Eagles to 255 points and a first-place finish on the opening night of finals, after participants have advance from the preliminaries. Campbell trails Georgia Southern by 55 points (200), with Youngstown State in third (179).
The Eagles got off to a great start in the finals as the Georgia Southern "A" team, consisting of Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.), Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada), Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) and Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.), swam to a third-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:40.26). The Georgia Southern "B" team of Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.), Emily Fell (Brunswick, Ga.), Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.) and Tess Antesberger (Chattanooga, Tenn.), swam to an eighth-place finish (1:43.19).
The Georgia Southern "A" team of Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.), Courtney Harrison (Greenville, S.C.), Lindsay Mullican (Lancaster, Pa.) and Bevillard led the Eagles to a first-place finish in the 400 medley.
In freestyle action, six Eagles finished the 500 free in the top 15. Campbell led the way with a second-place time of 5:08.82. Goodman finished right behind in third (5:13.18), while Mullican, Bevillard, Pirie Humphries (Athens, Ga.) and Stephens finished sixth (5:20.00), ninth (5:12.27), 10th (5:14.71) and 13th (5:22.36), respectively. Georgia Southern also had a great showing in the 50 free where White swam to a seventh-place finish (25.31). Campbell, Stephens and Crider followed with ninth (25.41), 10th (25.45) and 13th (26.01) finishes.
In the 200 IM, Harrison and Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.) finished back-to-back with third-(2:13.53) and fourth-place (2:14.25) finishes. Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) swam to a 15th-place finish (2:17.75).
Georgia Southern added to its lead on the three-meter boards where four Eagles contributed points. Sara Meisenhelder (Carmel, Ind.) finished fourth (206.10) while Alden Lynch (Jacksonville, Fla.), Amanda Macchio (Redding, Conn.) and Cameron Robertson (Alpharetta, Ga.) placed seventh (185.50), ninth (149.25) and 11th (144.30), respectively.
The Eagles will return to the pool tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. for preliminaries before they return for the second-round finals. The Highlander Invitational concludes on Saturday, November 20th, with the last round of finals scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
