Clendening Brings Eagles to 1-1 Draw at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) struck from eight yards out with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation to bring Georgia Southern back from a one goal deficit at Davidson Tuesday night (October 26). The Southern Conference opponents battled through two scoreless overtime periods as the Eagles earned a hard-fought road draw at Alumni Stadium.
Georgia Southern (3-9-3, 0-5-1) and Davidson (5-5-6, 1-3-3) worked through 42 minutes of scoreless action in the first half before Alex Givens put the Wildcats in front 1-0 at 42:11. The Wildcats had taken ten previous shots including one on goal before Givens broke through the middle for his first goal of the season. Givens converted a Yannick Pilgrim pass for the goal.
Thomas Valikonis (Greenville, S.C.) threatened for the Eagles in the 13th minute forcing Wildcat goalkeeper Chip Sanders into an early save. The Eagles came up with three more shots on goal before the 43rd minute, but could not find the back of the net before Givens gave the early advantage to Davidson.
Neal Bates (Watkinsville, Ga.) recorded two saves late in the first half to close the period with Davidson leading 1-0 at the break.
The Wildcats came out firing in the second half with three shots within the first five minutes, but the Eagles' strong defense reduced the threats. Davidson took three shots on goal before Clendening knotted the score at 1-1 in the 83rd minute. The junior broke down the middle from eight yards out to record his second goal of the season.
The Eagles limited the Wildcats to only one additional shot in the remaining minutes, while Georgia Southern recorded two shots on goal in the final seven minutes. Ethan LaPan (Martinez, Ga.) attempted the game winner for the Eagles looking to score off a Hunter Norton (Evans, Ga.) corner, but Sanders came up with a big save with twenty seconds remaining in regulation.
Strong Davidson defense kept Georgia Southern from recording a shot in the two overtime periods. Meanwhile, the Wildcats attempted five shots, two on goal, in the 20 minutes of overtime. Brian McGue gave Davidson one final attempt late in the second overtime, but Bates was equal to the task picking up his eighth save of the evening and sealing the draw.
Valikonis and LaPan each recorded two shots for the Eagles, while the Wildcats were led by Alex Caskey and Pilgrim with four shots each. Sanders came up with six stops in the contest to LaPan's eight.
