Eagles Clipped at No. 25 College of Charleston, 2-0

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In its second of five straight road contests, the Georgia Southern Men's Soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at No. 25 College of Charleston Saturday night (October 16) at Patriots Point. The Cougars are now winners of nine of their last ten matches and improve to 9-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in Southern Conference action. Georgia Southern dipped to 3-8-1, 0-4-0.

Hunter Norton (Evans, Ga.) led the Eagles with three shots, all on goal, as Georgia Southern totaled 14 shots and eight on goal in the contest. The Eagles had three shots on goal in the first half and five in the second half, including three in the final 15 minutes. Ryan Platt (Preston, England) posted four saves, all in the second half.

The Cougars converted two of their 23 shots to claim the victory thanks to Kareem Yearwood and Sean de Silva goals. Yearwood led the top-ranked SoCon team with three shots on goal, scoring in the 74th minute to put CofC in front 2-0, while de Silva handed the Cougars the early 1-0 lead scoring in the first half.

On just the fifth CofC shot of the night, de Silva notched his fifth goal of the season with an unassisted strike at 11:05. Controlling the ball on the left side, de Silva scored from 10-yards out to put the Cougars in front, 1-0.

At 56:22 in the second half, Norton was unable to knot the score after being taken down in the box. Norton's penalty kick was saved by Kees Heemskerk.

Yearwood doubled the Cougars' lead late in the second half with his second goal of the season coming off a rebound from Francis Twohig for a two-goal cushion the Eagles could not overcome.

Georgia Southern managed seven shots, including three on goal, after Yearwood's goal, but could not find the back of the net.

The Eagles take a short break from conference action traveling to Clemson Tuesday night, Oct. 19. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Fans can follow Eagle men's soccer at www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com, facebook.com/GSAthletics or twitter.com/GSScores.
