Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving Team sweeps the Campbell Double-Duals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team opened its 2010-11 campaign with wins over two Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) opponents. Senior Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada) led the charge, winning all three of her events.
The Eagles swept CCSA foes Campbell and North Carolina A&T at the Campbell double-dual meet in the Johnson Aquatic Center. The Eagles won seven of the 11 events and swam to 20 'Top 3' finishes.
"I thought we performed fairly well," said Head Coach Nathan Kellogg. "There were some ups and downs as it was our first meet and I felt like there were more positives than negatives. It was nice to see our kids be able to compete against somebody other than their teammates. I thought we could've been more sharp in some places but overall we raced very well as a group."
Campbell led the Eagles with first-place finishes in the 500 (5:07.59) and 1000 freestyle (10:31.89) and in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:38.80) where she swam the second leg of the Eagle A team comprised of Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.), Courtney Harrison (Greenville, S.C.) and Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.). The B team of Emily Fell (Brunswick, Ga.), Pirie Humphries (Athens, Ga.), Meredith Fehr (Matthews, N.C.) and Lindsay Mullican (Lancaster, Pa.) finished in third-place with a time of 3:50.79.
Georgia Southern opened the double-dual meet with a first and third-place finish in the 200 Medley. The A team of Linsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.), Tess Antesberger (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.), and Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) finished with a time of 1:51.75. The B team of Meg Beasley (Knoxville, Tenn.), Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.) came in third with a time of 1:56.24.
In the freestyle events, the Eagles placed 10 top-five individual finishes. The 50 freestyle saw two Eagles finish in the top three. White finished in second with a time of 25.53 and Crider followed in third (25.60). White and Crider also swam to "Top 3" finishes in the 100 Free, this time recording first and second-place finishes. White won the event in a time of 54.31. Crider trailed a second and a half back at 56.01.
Georgia Southern kept the pattern of "Top 3" finishes going into the 200 Free as Goodman took home second-place honors (1:59.60) and Humphries finished in third (2:00.93). The Eagles had a pair of third-place finishes in the 500 and 1000 Free. Stephens finished the 500 Free third with a time of 5:25.04 and Mullican swam to a 1000 Free third-place finish in 11:05.11.
Two Eagles finished first in the 100 Back and 100 Breast, with a one-two finish in the 100 Back. Bevillard picked up first-place honors in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:00.57, while Goodman who finished in second (1:00.93). Ostrom finished with a 1:08.32 taking first in the 100 Breast, Antesberger finished third (1:09.45).
Bevillard and Ostrom went second and third in the 200 Individual Medley. Bevillard took second with a time of 2:14.84 while Ostrom placed third with a time of 2:15.60.
Two Eagles finished in the "Top 5" for the 100 Fly. Mullican and Fehr finished fourth and fifth. Mullican placing fifth with a time of 1:02.78 and Fehr finishing .57 seconds behind in fifth (1:03.21).
The Eagles will travel to Virginia tomorrow where they will face the Richmond Spiders. This will be the first meeting between the two teams under Coach Kellogg's tenure at Georgia Southern.
"Richmond is tough, they're small, but very solid all-round," said Kellogg. "We have never competed against them in my tenure and I'm excited about seeing our divers compete. We are looking to go into tomorrow's dual-meet with improvement from tonight's double-dual meet. There are some things we didn't do well tonight so I'm looking for progress in those areas."
