Lady Eagles Welcome Cougars and Paladins to Hanner Fieldhouse

STATESBORO, GA – After starting the New Year on the road, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team returns to Hanner Fieldhouse for two Southern Conference matchups. The Lady Eagles welcome the College of Charleston Cougars to Statesboro on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the Furman Paladins on Monday, January 11 at 7 p.m.
Like College of Charleston, Georgia Southern (7-7, 2-3) is coming off a tough road trip to Samford and Chattanooga. The Lady Eagles suffered losses at both with Chattanooga's loss coming in the final three seconds with a made three-pointer. GS will look to rebound and nab its first win of 2010 this weekend.
For the season, Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) holds a slight advantage in scoring over J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.). Whitney chips in 11.0 points per game on average, while Ogburn averages 10.7 per game. Ogburn also leads on defense pulling down 4.9 rebounds on average. Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) follows averaging 4.78 boards, while Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) averages 4.5 rebounds per contest.
Georgia Southern is first in the Southern Conference in scoring defense and 3-point field goal percentage defense and third in field goal percentage defense. Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.), who is 43-of-47 from the free throw line, ranks first in the league with 92 percent efficiency.
College of Charleston (9-5, 4-2) has dropped two consecutive conference matches, the only conference losses of the season for the Cougars. CofC shot only 35 percent from the field in the 70-47 loss at Samford following a 64-53 loss at Chattanooga. Ericka Williams scored in double digits in both contests.
Leading the way for the Cougars this season is Jade Hughes who picks up 11.6 points per game. Tonia Gerty averages 10.9, while Williams adds 10.0 on average. Deidra Jones paces Charleston in rebounding, securing 7.7 boards per contest.
In league rankings, Charleston is third in scoring defense and second in field goal percentage defense, as well as three-point field goal percentage. Hughes, who paces the Cougars in scoring with 11.6 ppg, ranks 12th in the league in scoring, while Gerty, who averages 10.9 ppg, ranks 15th.
Georgia Southern holds the all-time series advantage over the Cougars, 22-11. However, Charleston has won the last three consecutive matchups, including both during the 2008-09 season. Lady Eagle head coach Rusty Cram is 16-8 when facing CofC.

Reagan Thompson scored a season-high 22 points in the win, while Kendra Berry added 14 and Lee Stephens contributed 12. Berry picked up a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Stephens paces the Furman offense this season averaging 12.7 points per game. Lakyn Ledford holds the rebounding edge for Furman, pulling down 4.9 boards on average.
Georgia Southern took both contests against Furman last season and holds the all-time series advantage, 26-17.
