Lady Eagles Complete Regular Season Sweep Over Elon, 71-66

ELON, N.C. – Sophomore guard Krista Tate posted another new career-high, scoring 15 points leading Georgia Southern to a Southern Conference victory over Elon Saturday afternoon (January 23). GS held its largest lead of 22 points with 17:52 in the second half, but the Phoenix chipped away at their deficit, drawing a one-point game with 43 seconds remaining. A lay-up from Tate followed by a perfect trip to the free throw line from Jamie Navarro sealed the 71-66 win.
Elon tied the score once, but never gained control as the Phoenix fell to 7-12 overall on the season and 3-9 in league play. GS, meanwhile, improved to 10-9, 5-5 with its 44 percent shooting effort from the floor.
Ali Ford led all scorers with a game-high 23 points, 19 coming in the second half. But Elon's offense suffered beyond Ford as the next leading scorer was Kelsey Evans with nine points. Georgia Southern posted three players in double-figure scoring, led by Tate's (Atlanta, Ga.) 15 points and Carolyn Whitney's (Duluth, Ga.) 14. Navarro (Naples, Fla.) finished out the game with 11 points and three assists.
A 69 percent effort from the free throw line (18-26), led by Tate's 9-of-12 effort, helped lead the Lady Eagles to victory while keeping the Phoenix to a 9-of-15 effort (60 percent). Georgia Southern shot 44 percent from the floor (23-52) with Elon posting a 40 percent clip (27-67). J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) hit a career-high two three-pointers to tie with Samantha Williams' (Kingsport, Tenn.) game-high two treys. GS closed out the game with seven '3s' to Elon's three.
The lone tie of the game came at the 16:44 marker in the first half with both teams pitted at 2-apiece, but Ogburn nailed consecutive treys from the field within one minute for an 8-4 GS lead. The Lady Eagles built its first double-digit lead, 16-6, off William's first trey of the game at 12:27. A 5-0 run capped by a Whitney jumper pushed the visiting advantage out to 11 points, 21-10. But following a jumper from Williams, 32-18, three minutes of scoreless basketball ensued before Tate hit her lone field goal of the half with 1:47 on the clock. Ogburn closed out the opening frame with a bucket in the paint as GS walked away with a 37-18 halftime lead.
Elon outscored Georgia Southern in the paint, 16-10, in the first stanza, but GS capitalized on second chance points, 12-6, over the Phoenix. Whitney scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting within the frame as Ogburn followed with eight points off two treys and a lay-up. Elon was held to 25 percent from the floor with its highest scorer being Courtney Medley with six points. GS took the advantage on glass, 27-20, led by Jessica Geiger's (Stone Mountain, Ga.) six rebounds.
