Treys Lead Bulldogs to Southern Conference Victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford hit 11 three-pointers to propel the Bulldogs to a 74-49 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon (January 2) in the Pete Hanna Center. Georgia Southern took 24 trips to the charity stripe to Samford's nine, but could not pull out the win. The Lady Eagles dropped to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in Southern Conference action with Samford improving to 10-5, 3-3.
Samford used its momentum and advantage from the opening frame to control the pace of the game in the second half. The Bulldogs opened their lead to 58-29 through the second media timeout. A three-pointer from Paige Anderson would be the only field goal to the third media from Samford as Georgia Southern turned in a 7-3 run highlighted by a three-pointer from Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) over four minutes. Continuing to build their lead, the Bulldogs extended its advantage to 70-44 with 3:05 in the game. Ro-Ro Smith (Blackshear, Ga.) hit two from the free throw line to close out the game, 74-49.
The Bulldogs used an 11-of-25 effort from three-point range (44 percent) to shoot 50 percent from the floor. Georgia Southern – 3-of-9 from three-point range – shot 38 percent from the field. Gathering 20 fouls, the Bulldogs allowed the Lady Eagles 24 trips to the charity stripe. GS converted 18 for 75 percent efficiency. Samford – 5-of-9 from the free throw line – shot 56 percent.
Savannah Hill led all scorers with 14 points and six rebounds, while Paige Anderson followed adding 13 to the board. Monica Maxwell closed out the game collecting 10 points. Held to single digits, GS was led in scoring by Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) with eight points. Candice Ivy (Roswell, Ga.) pulled down a team-high six boards leading GS to win the edge on the glass, 30-27. Samford recorded 14 steals in the game with six different players each picking up two apiece.
The leading scorer for the Bulldogs this season, Hill paced the team with 10 points at intermission, all in the paint. Samford hit 8-of-13 from three-point range, a 62 percent shooting efficiency; GS connected on two (33 percent).
