Sharp Shooting Leads Wildcats to SoCon Victory

STATESBORO, GA – Junior Jamie Navarro and sophomore Krista Tate both set career-highs in scoring on the evening, but could not lead Georgia Southern past Davidson Monday night (January 18). The Lady Eagles dropped a 68-50 decision to the Wildcats inside Hanner Fieldhouse, snapping a two-game win streak. Georgia Southern fell to 9-9 overall and 4-5 against Southern Conference opponents with Davidson improving to 9-9, 7-3.
Georgia Southern climbed back to within less than five points several times in the course of the game, but Davidson pulled away in double digits with 1:41 to play in the game. Led by Monica Laune's 10 points in the opening frame, Davidson grabbed a 35-26 halftime lead propelled by an opening tip 8-0 run and closing two minute 8-1 run. Georgia Southern won the tip, but Davidson won the early lead – a lead never relinquished - taking advantage of three scoreless minutes of Lady Eagle basketball.
Navarro (Naples, Fla.) nabbed the first points for GS with a two-point trip to the free throw line at 16:42. Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) then hit a lay-up on a pass from J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) before Janay Wilson (Warner Robins, Ga.) converted a jumper and foul for an old-fashioned three-point play bringing the score to 13-7, Davidson. The Wildcats expanded their lead to 10 before Whitney nailed a trey, slicing the deficit. On Navarro's second old-fashioned three-point play in the first half, the junior continued what became an 8-0 Georgia Southern run drawing the Lady Eagles to within two points, 27-25. The Wildcats, however, responded with their own 8-1 run to close out the half with a 35-26 advantage.
Coming out of the break, Navarro quickly tallied five points with a three-pointer and two at the charity stripe for a 35-31 margin. Whitney drained her second trey of the contest at the 14:42 marker bringing the Lady Eagles within four again (38-34). Ogburn hit a jumper and free throw off a foul from Monica Laune at the 13:13 marker pitting the score, 40-37, before Davidson posted a 7-0 run for a 10-point lead. With 3:37 remaining, Wilson cut the deficit down to seven points with two at the charity stripe, 52-45, but that would be the closest Georgia Southern would get the remainder of the game. The Wildcats capped the game with an 11-2 run over the final two minutes.
Navarro collected eight of her career-high 15 points in the first half to lead GS at the break. Tate put in nine in the second half to finish with 12 points, topping her previous career-high of 10. Wilson tipped in eight points off the bench to follow behind Navarro and Tate, matching Whitney's eight points. Georgia Southern lost the edge on glass, 34-42. Alex Thompson recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds and 10 points, one of three Wildcats in double-figure scoring.
Laune tied for a game-high 15 points as Julia Paquette added 12 points in the victory. Davidson shot 44 percent from the field, while holding Georgia Southern to 25 percent efficiency. Both teams picked up 21 points at the charity stripe with the Wildcats taking four extra trips. Georgia Southern shot 78 percent from the line with Navarro hitting a perfect 8-of-8 and Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) going 6-of-7. Wilson went 4-of-5 from the line, while Davidson connected on 68 percent of its attempts.
Georgia Southern will look to rebound with a two-game road trip to Elon and UNC Greensboro. Tip at Elon is slated for 2:00 p.m., January 23, and 7:00 p.m. at UNC Greensboro, January 25.
