CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson (2-5-1), fresh off their upset win over #8 Virginia, edged Georgia Southern's men's soccer team (0-7-1) 6-0 in Tuesday's non-conference match. The Eagles were unable to find the magic from a year ago when they upset the Tigers 2-1.
Georgia Southern kept the match close in the first half, allowing only one goal. Austin Savage notched his first goal of the season in the 11th minute to give Clemson the early lead.
Danny Hall (Conyers, Ga.) responded for the Eagles with a shot on goal in the 15th minute.
Georgia Southern received a corner kick after a pair of fouls by Clemson. Matt Crowell (St. Augustine, Fla.) took the kick for Georgia Southern.
The Eagles went on the attack right before the end of the first half and recorded four shots in a ten minute period. Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) had his shot blocked in the 36th minute. Aleksandar Tomic (Sydney, Australia) put a shot on target, forcing Joseph Bendik to make a save. Joe Madigan (Centennial, Colo.) took two shot but missed wide of the net on both.
Clemson added its second goal after a corner kick by Hall. Nathan Thornton scored the first of his two goals in the 50th minute. Thornton added his second in the 54th minute off a pass from Savage.
The Tigers would go on to score five goals in the second half. Savage and Thornton led the way with two goals each.
The Eagles return home to face Davidson Saturday at 1 p.m. The match will be the conference opener after last weekend's match with Elon was halted due to unplayable conditions. The men's and women's soccer teams will host the Third Annual Little Eagles Soccer Clinic following the conclusion of Saturday's match.
