Men's Soccer Opens 2009 Season at UCF Fall Classic

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team will open the 2009 regular season in Orlando, Fla. at the UCF Fall Classic. The Eagles will face Iona Friday and Central Florida Sunday.
The Eagles went undefeated in the exhibition period, defeating Georgia State and Lander.
Matt Crowell(St. Augustine, Fla.) and Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored goals within four minutes of each other in the second half to give Georgia Southern a 2-0 win over the Panthers. Crowell scored off of a deflection to give the Eagles their first lead of the match in the 73rd minute. Cox added the second goal in the 77th minute on a free kick placed over the head of the goalie.
In the second match against Lander, the Eagles got off to a quick start. Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored a goal off of a pass from Sean Pinto (Marietta, Ga.) less than two minutes into the match to give the Eagles an early lead. Cox recorded nine shots with four coming on goal.
Iona opened the season with a 1-0 win over New Hampshire. The Gaels got a first half goal from Alexander Paszek and held on to the shutout to preserve the win.
The Knights lost a tough exhibition match to #11 South Florida. The Bulls scored twice within a seven minute period to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. UCF cut the lead to one with a goal in the 75th minute but were unable to complete the comeback.
Game times for this weekend matches are Friday at 6:00 p.m. against Iona and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against UCF.
