Women's Soccer Edged by Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Georgia Southern women's soccer team (0-9, 0-2) was edged by Western Carolina (5-3-2, 2-0) 1-0.
The Eagles managed to hold the Catamounts to only a late second-half goal but were unable to tie the match. The match was the fourth decided by a goal this season.
Rachael Shomper scored the game winner off a rebounded shot that hit the post in the 77th minute.
Georgia Southern went on the attack early and earned a corner kick in the 3rd minute; however, both offenses remained quiet in the first half, recording a shot each. Chelsea Kephart (Cumming, Ga.) took the Eagles' first shot in the 40th minute but missed to the right of the net.
Western Carolina opened the second half with three shots. The third shot forced Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.) to come up with the save. Santos made her second save of the afternoon at the 65th minute mark, denying Kellie Oberholtzer of a goal.
The Catamounts took three shots in the 77th minute, and Santos saved two of them; but the third gave WCU the lead. Shomper scored her first goal of the season off a rebounded shot.
Ashley Sepaniak (Alpharetta, Ga.) made her first start of her career and tallied a shot in the 80th minute as the Eagles tried to tie the match.
Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) launched a header in the 81st minute that missed high of the net.
Holly Dyer (Auburn, Ga.) put a shot on target in the final minutes but was denied of the game-tying goal by Caitlin Williams.
The Eagles return home to face Elon in the home conference opener Friday at 4 p.m.
