STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team (0-4-1) will look to build off their strong finish in the Gonzaga/Nike Classic last weekend and look to earn their first win Sunday at Mercer (0-3-2).
Georgia Southern (0-4-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit late in the second half to tie the finale of the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic against Oregon State 2-2. The Eagles held on in two overtimes against the #6 ranked team in the Far West Region to record the tie.
Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Danny Hall (Conyers, Ga.) scored Georgia Southern's two goals within minutes of each other in the second half. Hall recorded the first goal off a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Cox tied the match at the 79:50 mark off a pass from David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.).
The Bears are also seeking their first win of the season and are led on offense by Ian Cameron and Chrispine Ong'Ango. Cameron paces the team in shots and has recorded a goal this season. Ong'Ango has also scored a goal and has put all five of his shots on target. He leads the team in that category.
Mercer was bested by Wofford 1-0 in double overtime last time out. Both teams were unable to get a goal across, and the match seemed destined for a tie before Mercer fouled Wofford's Nick Schuermann inside the penalty box. Schuermann connected on his penalty kick shot to give Wofford the win with 1:18 remaining.
The Eagles will face Mercer Sunday at 5 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
