Eagles Shine at Brevard Mountain Invitational

BREVARD, N.C. – The Georgia Southern women's tennis team continued to shine on the second day of the Brevard Mountain Invitational, Saturday, September 12. Senior Kristi Kegerreis will look to defend her singles title from last year in the 'A' singles draw tomorrow, as Allison Beeler also advanced to the singles final of the 'B' flight.
“This has been a great tournament experience for us to open our season. We are excited that we have two singles finalists in the main draw and a finalist in the consolation bracket,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “We are proud of our results this week, but more importantly, we are proud of the way we came together as a team for our first outing. I am really pleased with the leadership our seniors have shown and having a senior in the finals tomorrow shows the kind of leadership they bring to the team.”
Four rounds of play took place on the second day of competition in Brevard. In singles action of flight 'A', Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) defeated conference foe Western Carolina's senior Amanda Massey in the quarterfinal round, 6-2, 6-4. The senior Eagle then went on to conquer Patricia Cortes of Coastal Carolina, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9. Kegerreis will play for the singles flight 'A' title tomorrow morning at 10:30 against White of Gardner-Webb. Also competing in the 'A' draw, newcomer Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) blanketed Furgeson of Wingate, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semifinal round, where she fell to White of Gardner-Webb in a third-set tiebreak, 6-1, 2-6, 10-6. White will face Kegerreis in the finals.
In the 'B' flight, freshman Allison Beeler cruised through the quarterfinal round and then took down Nicole Schon of UNC Asheville in straight 6-4 sets. The Alpahretta, Ga., native will compete for the 'B' flight singles title on Sunday. Teammate Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) suffered a setback, falling to Coastal Carolina's Caitlyn Brooksbank, 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation bracket.
Competing in flight 'C', Alexandra Langmo dropped a 6-1,6-1 decision to UNC Asheville's Sarah Brinkley, while teammate Taylor Jones defeated two opponents en route to the finals of the consolation 'C' singles draw.
For the Eagles in doubles action, Kegerreis and Maffett earned a victory over Kasey Ellis and White from Gardner-Webb due to an infury default. The Eagle tandem then advanced to the semifinals where they lost to Cortes and Hill of Coastal Carolina, 8-4.
In the 'B' flight, Beeler and Hungerford advanced to the semifinals after winning an 8-4 decision over Gardner-Webb's Allie Mills and Tayenner Black. The Eagle pair of Langmo and Christine Caforio find themselves competing for the doubles title of the 'B' draw after defeating Brooks and Malitek, 8-6, from Coastal Carolina, Tania Mateva and Chelsea Hall of UNC Asheville, 8-1, and Dilman and Labos of Brevard, 8-3.
The final day of play will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the semifinals of doubles. Final rounds start at 10:30 a.m. as the Eagles will seek a doubles crown and two singles titles.
