STATESBORO, GA – Matthijis Verdam advanced to his first singles finals as a Georgia Southern Eagle on day two of the Georgia Southern Invitational bypassing two opponents en route to the championship round on Saturday, September 12, at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Verdam will take on Gleb Maslau of North Florida for the 'B' singles title on Sunday. The final day of competition will begin tomorrow with doubles at 10 a.m., followed by singles at 12 p.m.
After winning in round one of flight 'A' singles, Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) dropped a straight-set match to Mikk Irdoja of Armstrong Atlantic, 6-2, 6-1. Also competing in the round of eight, teammate Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Moritz Buerchner of North Florida.
Verdam, after a first-round bye, uprooted Kennesaw State's Dylan Higgins in a two-set defeat, 6-3, 6-1, advancing to the semifinal round where the Eagle took down Simon Janik, also of Kennesaw State. The freshman Eagle handled Janik in the semis, winning in straight 6-3 sets. Verdam will face Maslau Sunday afternoon for the singles title of the 'B' flight. Also in flight 'B', sophomore Castanhel proved victorious over teammate Sebastien Felt. The Eagle opponents pushed the first set to a tiebreak where Castanhel triumphed, and then cruised to a 6-1 second set win. The Criciuma, Brazil native then faced off against Gleb Maslau of North Florida in the quarterfinal round later in the day. Maslau defeated Castanhel, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Thomas Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) captured the flight 'B' singles consolation title after surpassing two opponents on day two. Bekkers opened the day defeating teammate Alex Yuille, 6-1, 6-1, before downing The Citadel's Tripp Larkin in straight-sets. Bekkers owned the title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Larkin.
"We played well as a team, but individually everybody can make some adjustments to play better tomorrow,” said head coach Justin Miles.
Three Georgia Southern doubles pairs will hit the courts on Sunday looking for titles as Bekkers and Verdam will compete for the 'A' doubles title against Irdoja and Array of Armstrong Atlantic. Meanwhile, Castanhel and Garrido will face off against Kennesaw State's Bouttell and Ozdemir for the flight 'B' title and Felt and Yuille will seek the 'B' consolation bracket title against Suesserman and Higgins, also of Kennesaw State.
