BREVARD, N.C. – Inclement weather shortened the first day of the Brevard Mountain Invitational for the Georgia Southern women's tennis team. The Eagles captured five singles wins before rain postponed the first round of doubles action.
“I was really proud of the way the team competed for their first showing of the season. We did a lot of things well today,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “I was pleased with the support the team showed towards each other. I'm excited we got off on the right foot for the season.”
In flight 'A' of singles action, Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) opened her senior year with a win over Kara Stasikelis of Wingate, 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.), in an Eagle uniform for the first time, ousted Brittany Craig of West Virginia State, 6-1, 6-3.
Competing in 'B' singles, Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) defeated Amanda Malatek of Coastal Carolina in a tiebreak. The Eagle took the first set 6-3, but fell in the second, 3-6, and cruised in the tiebreak for the match win at 10-2. Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) dropped her first match as an Eagle to Casey Ellis of Gardner-Webb, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
In the final flight of singles, freshman Taylor Jones (Warner Robins, Ga.) fell to Louise Bottomly of UNC Asheville, 6-2, 6-0. Alexandro Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) took on Pierce Dilliard of Wingate, crushing the Bulldog, 6-1, 6-0.
Play will resume tomorrow morning with doubles action beginning at 9 a.m. Kegerreis and Maffett, along with Beeler and Hungerford will take on Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina pairs, respectively. The winner's bracket of singles action will begin at 10 a.m.
