STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern women's tennis team opens fall competition this weekend at the Brevard Mountain Invitational. Georgia Southern is one of eight teams participating in the tournament that runs from September 11-13 in Brevard, N.C.
“I'm excited for our team to hit the courts for the first time this season. This tournament is a great way for our players to get experience early on,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “It will also be exciting for our five newcomers to get some good competitive action throughout the weekend in Brevard.”
The Eagles make the return trip to Brevard, having opened the 2008-09 season at the same tournament. The eight-team field this year includes: Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, West Virginia State, Western Carolina, Wingate, UNC Asheville and host Brevard.
Match play begins Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the flighted tournament that features A, B, and C draws in both singles and doubles with consolation brackets.
Georgia Southern returns five lettermen to the 2009-2010 squad and adds five newcomers. The Eagles will be led by seniors Christine Caforio, Jessica Fuller and Kristi Kegerreis.
The fall-opening tournament will be a good chance for the team to gain some early experience and a chance to test out new doubles pairings for the upcoming regular season.
“We should get a good look at how our doubles will shape up this year as I'm going to try some new doubles pairs this weekend,” said Bonner. “I will also be looking for our two seniors that are making the trip, Christine and Kristi, to provide leadership for the team.”
