STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team begins its fall tournament season hosting the Georgia Southern Invitational, September 11-13, at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Armstrong Atlantic, The Citadel, Kennesaw State and North Florida will compete with the Eagles in the three-day tournament which begins with doubles at 11 a.m. on Friday. The first round of singles action will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
The tournament features two singles and two doubles draw, all of which have a consolation bracket. The Eagles host the tournament for the fourth-straight year. “This tournament will be a good opportunity for our younger guys to get some match experience. With some newcomers, this will be their first competition at this level,” said Eagle head coach Justin Miles.
The Invitational will give the Eagles a first look at the newcomers in competition as well as a chance to prepare for the remainder of the fall season.
“I feel confident in our newcomers. They have been playing well during practice, showing a lot of potential on the court,” said Miles. “They have been really pushing the returners in practice, trying to vie for a place in the starting lineup, and this will test them.”
With the graduation of the number one doubles team in Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands from the 2008-09 squad, this fall-opening tournament will allow the Eagles to get a glance at new doubles pairings.
“We get the chance to figure out our strengths and weaknesses in doubles this weekend so that we can find our best pairings by the end of the fall season.”
Georgia Southern returned eight players to the roster and added four newcomers. The squad will be comprised of three seniors, four juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen. The Eagles went 10-9-1 for the 2008-09 season.
