2009-2010 Women's Basketball Schedule Announced

STATESBORO, GA –A home match-up against Brewton-Parker on November 13 kicks off 2009-2010 regular season action for the Georgia Southern women’s basketball in the newly released schedule. Highlights on the schedule include a contest at Duke University and a Thanksgiving tournament at the University of Colorado.
The Eagles celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Hanner Fieldhouse this season opening their schedule at home Friday, November 13, with a Brewton-Parker Homecoming Weekend match-up. The team then hits the road five straight contests. When Georgia Southern travels to Duke, November 19, it will mark the third time in program history the two teams have met and the first in head coach Rusty Cram’s tenure; the last recorded contest between the Blue Devils and Eagles dates back to 1984-85. The series record between the two programs is even at one-all.
After the Duke game, the Eagles travel to take on the Auburn Tigers, November 24, before heading to Colorado for the 23rd Annual Coors Challenge. The four participating teams in the Thanksgiving tournament include New Orleans, Harvard, Georgia Southern and host University of Colorado. It will be the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and Buffaloes.
“It is certainly a very challenging start to our season. But when we have seven newcomers to our roster, we need to get them ready for this level of play as soon as possible,” said Cram. “And that is what we feel our early schedule will prepare them for.”
The Southern Conference portion of the schedule begins December 2 at Appalachian State. The Lady Eagles and Elon Phoenix will meet on December 5 in Hanner Fieldhouse before playing a pair of non-conference outings on the road against Mercer and UNC Asheville.
Georgia Southern returns home for a four-game stretch closing out the 2009 calendar year and the month of December. Conference games against defending Southern Conference Champion Western Carolina University and UNC Greensboro are sandwiched around non-conference match-ups against Kennesaw State and Florida Atlantic.
The New Year marks the beginning of 16 straight SoCon games, with the first two games on the road at Samford (January 2) and Chattanooga (January 4). The Lady Eagles return home to face College of Charleston (Jan. 9) and Furman (Jan. 11).
After a league game on the road at Wofford, Georgia Southern returns to Hanner Fieldhouse for a game against Davidson on January 16 before traveling to North Carolina for Elon, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina.
Georgia Southern closes out the final month of regular season play with four games at Hanner Fieldhouse and three on the road. The Samford Bulldogs and Chattanooga Lady Mocs return a visit to Statesboro on February 6th and 8th, respectively.
The following week, Georgia Southern hits College of Charleston and Furman on the road prior to hosting Wofford on February 20. The Lady Eagles take their final regular season road trip to Davidson on February 22 and honor four seniors in their last home contest on February 27 against Appalachian State.
“Our conference schedule is as tough as always. There are a lot of returners across the conference, making it a tough season,” stated Cram. “Our goal is to get our young players ready to contribute to the team by the time we reach conference play.”
A change in venue brings both the men’s and women’s Southern Conference Championships to Charlotte, N.C. to be contested March 4-8.
