NORMAN, Okla. – Georgia Southern golfer Spencer Fulford has been named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars list, as released by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Fulford joins 108 other Division I collegiate golfers in receiving the honor.
“Spence is the epitome of the student-athlete. He works hard on the course and in the classroom,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Spence had a great season athletically and academically. He's a hard worker both on his game and with his studies. We're excited that he received such a great achievement.”
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, have competed in at least two years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 in Division I.
Fulford, a rising senior, finished the 2008-09 campaign with the third lowest stroke average on the team with a 73.59 in 32 rounds. The Rocky Mount, N.C. native recorded three top five finishes on the year including a fifth place finish at the NCAA Regional in Sorrento, Fla. Fulford fired an 8-under par 205 following a collegiate career low third round 66. Fulford was one stroke shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships in Toledo, Ohio.
Earlier in the season, the Eagle captured a second-place finish at the Raines Development Intercollegiate carding a 206 (-10) and a fourth-place standing in Hawai'i at the Kaua'i Intercollegiate Cup with a 3-under 213.
A member of the SoCon Spring Academic All-Conference team, Fulford carries a 3.61 GPA majoring in Management.
