SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Seniors Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands were named to the first team all-conference for doubles competition as announced by the Southern Conference office Thursday morning (April 23). They were joined by Furman's top team of Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman. Rounding out the third doubles tandem was Elon's Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec.
“It's a very deserving award for both of them. They are probably the best doubles tandem I've had since I've been at Georgia Southern,” said head coach Justin Miles. “I've very proud of both of them, they've worked extremely hard to earn it.”
The Eagle duo has led the team from the No. 1 position the entire season, posting a 21-9 overall doubles mark, including a 12-6 dual ledger. The Mortsel, Belgium and Nassau, Bahamas natives clinched five doubles points for the Eagles over the course of the season, including a decisive point in a 4-3 win over College of Charleston. The tandem went 7-2 against conference opponents, dropping decisions only to Furman's and Wofford's top teams.
De Weerdt and Sands enter Friday's tournament match looking to extend on a six-match win streak they currently hold. The streak dates back to April 4 as the tandem won every match played in the month. They lead the team in doubles wins overall and in conference play. De Weerdt recorded his 100th collegiate career win with his doubles victory against Chattanooga on April 18.
No. 5 seeded Georgia Southern takes on No. 4 seeded UNC Greensboro in the quarterfinal round of the SoCon Tournament Friday, April 24 at 9 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C.
