STATESBORO, GA ? At the conclusion of Southern Conference play for the 2009 regular season, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team will begin the second part of its schedule on Friday, April 24 receiving the No.5 seed in the SoCon Tournament. The Eagles will take on four seeded UNC Greensboro in the quarterfinal round at 9 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C.
Georgia Southern dropped a very close regular season match-up to UNCG, 4-3, on April 11 on the road. The Spartans grabbed a tight doubles point, which put UNCG on top after each team split three singles matches apiece. The Eagles were victorious on the bottom half of the lineup, as seeds four, five and six all took victories over their Spartan opponents.
"Going into the SoCon tournament the team is healthy and confident that we can perform well. We have worked very hard all year and have played a very competitive schedule leading up to this,” said head coach Justin Miles. “There is always a lot of excitement surrounding the tournament, but it will be nothing that we have not seen so far. The match against UNCG is definitely going to be very competitive from start to finish and at the end hopefully we come out on top."
The Eagles rounded out regular season play boasting a 63-48 dual match singles record alongside a winning record against conference opponents. Doubles competition proved to be a vital component to the game for the Eagles in 2009 as they captured 11 doubles points and recorded a 31-26 dual match record. The senior tandem of Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands leads the team in wins with a 12-6 record at the No.1 spot. Juniors Jayraj Jadeja and Justin Flynn come in a close second with a record of 11-5.
Georgia Southern closed out the regular season with a 10-8-1 overall record, 5-4-1 in the conference.
Orcun Seyrek leads the Spartans from the top singles position. Seyrek recorded a 19-2 dual singles record and led UNCG to a 14-7 overall mark, 7-3 conference ledger. UNCG finished tied for third with Wofford at the end of the regular season, but earned the No.4 seed as Wofford took the regular season match-up between the two schools.
