BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Georgia Southern defeated Samford 8-0 in the final game of the Magic City Classic. The Eagles went on a seven game win streak, starting with the first game of the classic and shut out all five teams that they faced.
Georgia Southern entered the Classic with a 9-10 record and left riding a five game win streak. The Eagles went on to win seven straight games and improved their record to 16-10.
Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario) tossed a three-hit shutout to earn her sixth win of the season. Laliberte (6-2) allowed three hits and struck out three with one walk. Laliberte went 3-0 on the weekend with one shutout and combined for two others.
Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) tied the school's career home run record in the fourth inning, tying Sam Steiner's (2002-06) mark of 20. Siliga went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Her three-run homer in the fourth put the Eagles ahead 8-0.
Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.) and Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) each had two RBI hits. Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) added two more hits in three at-bats.
Georgia Southern scored a pair of runs in the second and added three more in the third. Beasley hit a two-out single to left scoring Side and Russo in the second inning. Side returned the favor in the third, plating two more runs with a two-RBI double.
Softball went on to sweep Presbyterian in a Wednesday doubleheader, winning game one 3-0 and game two 3-2.
