Coach Kennedy's Class Continues to Grow

STATESBORO, Ga. - Head men's soccer coach Kevin Kennedy signed his 13th player adding Joe Hughes to the 2009 recruiting class.
Kennedy's class now includes two forwards, six midfielders, a goalkeeper and three defenders.

Joe plays as a forward and a midfielder for his club and high school teams. As a member of the U-18 North Meck team, he has had the opportunity to compete in the USSF Development Academy League. Playing primarily as a midfielder at Lake Norman High School, Joe earned All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State honors in his senior campaign. He was also recognized as the 2008 North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year. Over the course of the 2006-2008 seasons, Lake Norman boasted a 60-game unbeaten streak with AAA State Titles in 2006 and 2007. While setting the school's career assist record, Joe led Lake Norman to a semi-final appearance in the 2008 state tournament. As a member of his high school's track team, Joe earned All-Region honors and set the school record in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, and 4x200m events.

He obviously has great pace and size, and I believe that he possesses very good technique and has a firm understanding of the game. He can play a number of different roles for our team, and he should compete for playing time right away.”

David plays as a central defender and outside defender for his club and high school teams. As a member of the Bridge FA team that competes in the USSF Developmental Academy League, David helped his team to a second place finish in the South Conference last fall. His club team also won the US Club Soccer National Championship in 2006-2007. While earning All-Region and All-State honors at Frederica Academy, David led his high school team to 4 consecutive GISA Class AA State Championships. In addition to his domestic experience, David has been able to compete with club teams in Sweden and England.
Coach Kennedy on David Hurtado: “David will be a good addition to our squad. He is obviously a winner, and he has an outstanding background. He is tough, technical and he really likes to get involved in the attack. We're confident that his solid defensive ability and willingness to get forward out of the back will be a good fit for our style of play. He could compete for playing time right away.”
