Lady Eagles Face Elon in SoCon Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference has announced the tournament bracket for the 2009 Women's Basketball Championship to be held in Chattanooga, Tenn. Tournament play begins Thursday, March 5 at 3 p.m. in McKenzie Arena with three games to be played. The Lady Eagles earned the No. 6 seed and will open tournament play against Elon on Thursday following the conclusion of the second game.
Georgia Southern (16-13, 11-9) is coming off a 68-59 defeat at Appalachian State to close out the regular season (Feb. 28). The loss tied Davidson and Georgia Southern in the conference standings with an 11-9 conference tally. Davidson earned the No.5 seed because it swept the Lady Eagles in the regular season.
The Lady Eagles completed a regular season sweep over the Elon Phoenix (2-18, 4-25) with a 59-29 decision in Hanner on Jan. 26. Earlier in the season, Georgia Southern took a 67-58 victory at Elon.
Georgia Southern holds an 8-4 all-time series record over the Phoenix. The two teams have never met on neutral soil.
The Lady Eagles will be in search of their third SoCon Tournament title, hoping to add to their 1993 and 1994 championships. Last year's tournament saw GSU fall in the quarterfinal round to College of Charleston. Georgia Southern holds an all-time SoCon tournament series record of 20-14. In the tournament break-down, the Lady Eagles are as follows: 1st round: 2-0, Quarterfinals: 10-7, Semifinals: 6-3, Final: 2-4.
With a win on Thursday over the Phoenix, Georgia Southern would advance to the quarterfinal round to take on No. 3 Western Carolina on Saturday, March 7.
