SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced Wednesday afternoon the Athletes of the Month for February and sophomore Joe Monte earned the honor for men’s golf.
“Joe played well in both tournaments in February. He played extremely well down at the John Hayt Invitational with tough conditions and a tough field,” said head coach Larry Mays. “He’s come along nicely in the spring and we’re glad he’s playing well.”
The Chantilly, Va. native earned the season opening men’s golfer of the week honors in February. The sophomore Eagle led Georgia Southern with six rounds, averaging 72.83 strokes in the two tournaments of February. Monte finished tied for 50th at the spring opening Gator Invitational on the always challenging Mark Bostick Golf Course. The Eagle shot a 218 three round total (72-74-72) on the par 70 course.
In the second tournament, Monte took a sixth place finish competing in the John Hayt Invitational concluding the three day tournament with a 3-over par 219. His season-low 2-under par 70 for his third round tally, combined with opening rounds of 76 and 73, propelled the Eagle to the sixth spot on the leader board. Monte’s sixth place finish led the Eagles to a team finish of third place in the 15-team field on the championship style Sawgrass Country Club.
The player of the month is selected by a vote of the men’s golf conference sports information directors.
