Georgia Southern Hits the Road to Face the Top Two Conference Leaders

STATESBORO, GA ? The Georgia Southern women's basketball team hits the road for two tough Southern Conference games. The Lady Eagles face the SoCon leader Chattanooga, on Saturday, February 7 at 3 p.m. and turn around to face the second place leader Samford, Monday (Feb. 9) at 5:30 p.m.
Georgia Southern looks to complete a regular season sweep of the Chattanooga Lady Mocs on Saturday. In the first regular season contest, the Lady Eagles snapped a 27-game conference win streak by the Lady Mocs and handed them their only conference loss of the season thus far. Georgia Southern's Jamie Navarro (Naples, FL) nailed a jumper with six seconds left in the game to give the Lady Eagles the go ahead shot to secure a 66-65 victory on Jan. 3.
On Monday, the Lady Eagles will look to rebound from a 55-46 loss to Samford earlier this season. J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) lead Georgia Southern with 17 points in the contest, while senior Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) led the team in rebounding, securing six boards.
The Lady Eagles enter the contest on Saturday standing at 14-8 overall and 9-4 in the conference, placing them fourth in the standings. Georgia Southern is coming off a 67-62 victory over Western Carolina (Feb. 2). The Lady Eagles had four players score in double figures in the winning effort; Melson paced the Lady Eagles with 12 points, while Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) pulled down a team-high nine boards.
Georgia Southern is led this season by Melson, who averages 12.5 points per game. Melson is followed by Ogburn, who averages 10.2 points per game and leads the team in rebounding with 5.7 boards per game. Geiger is second on the team in rebounding, pulling down an average of 5.4 boards per contest.
After defeating Elon, 82-56 (Feb. 2), the Lady Mocs enter Saturday's game atop the SoCon standings with a 17-6 overall record and 13-1 conference mark. Chattanooga has won the last eight games since falling to the Lady Eagles. Courtney Medley paced the Lady Mocs against Elon, draining a team-high 19 points as Urysla Cotton pulled down a team-high four rebounds. Leading the Lady Mocs in scoring this season is Shanara Hollinquest with 17 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per contest.
Samford, who hosts College of Charleston on Saturday, currently stands at 17-4 overall and 12-2 in the conference. Its only two conference losses in the season come from Chattanooga, 55-54, and UNC Greensboro. Samford is coming off the 49-37 loss to UNCG on Feb. 2. Savannah Hill led Samford in scoring with 11 points and seven boards. Overall this season, Hill leads the Bulldogs with 13.2 points per game and 5.8 boards per game.
