Lady Eagles Fall in Regular Season Finale at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. ? The Georgia Southern women's basketball team fell in its regular season finale, 68-59, at Appalachian State Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28). With the loss, the Lady Eagles dropped to 16-13 overall and 11-9 in Southern Conference play. The Mountaineers improved to 8-22, 7-13.
Georgia Southern struck first when J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) connected on a pair of free throws, but the Eagles were scoreless from the floor through the first four minutes as the Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-2 advantage by the first media timeout at the 15:39 marker. Georgia Southern connected on its first field goal off a jumper from Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) at the 14:12 ticker and took their first lead when Brittney Nelson (Rochester, Mich.) nailed a three-pointer, pushing the score to a 9-8 Georgia Southern advantage before Sam Ramirez and Brittney Spencer hit back-to-back jumpers as the Mountaineers regained the lead, 13-9, with 11:50 remaining.
Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) drained her first ?3' of the afternoon before the Mountaineers opened an 8-0 run to widen their lead to 20-12 with 8:46 remaining in the opening half. Nelson snapped the three minute scoring drought by the Eagles with a field goal from beyond the three point arc, cutting the margin to five points. ASU maintained a six point lead, 24-18, for three minutes as neither team hit a bucket to the fourth official timeout at 3:57. The Lady Eagles erupted following the last official timeout as Candice Ivy (Roswell, Ga.) drained consecutive buckets before Geiger hit a jumper and Williams closed out the half with her second ?3' of the game.
Williams' three cut the scoring margin to one point as ASU lead 28-27 at the halftime break. The Eagles were held to a 38 shooting percentage in the opening half as four players each contributed six points. ASU went 11-of-26 from the floor (42 percent) as Ramirez drained nine points and Canesha Edwards pulled down six boards.
Geiger quickly tied the game at 30-all draining a three-pointer to start the second half, but ASU regained a five point lead when Spencer hit a three at the buzzer, making the score 37-32. Mixon was called on a technical foul with 15:55 left sending both Ogburn and Williams to the line. The Eagles connected on 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to make it a 39-37 ballgame. Nelson connected on her third trey of the game at the 12:41 marker, cutting the lead to one point, 41-40.
It was a back-and-forth affair as the Mountaineers held their lead until the 7:03 ticker when Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) nailed a three, giving Georgia Southern its first lead of the game, 49-48, since the beginning of the game. Edwards connected on an old fashioned three point play with 5:34 remaining the push ASU in the lead, 51-49.

Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) connected on a pair of three-pointers in the final minute as the Mountaineers closed out a 68-59 victory on senior day.
ASU went 18-of-21 from the charity stripe (86 percent) to Georgia Southern's 10-of-15 in the game as the Mountaineers held the Eagles to a 38 shooting percentage. The Mountaineers scored 26 points in the paint to the Eagles' 12, but Georgia Southern scored 31 points off the bench to ASU's 11.
