Lady Eagles Host Davidson in Final Home Game of 2009

STATESBORO, GA ? The Georgia Southern women's basketball team will compete in its final home game of the 2009 season on Saturday, February 21, against Southern Conference foe Davidson. Seniors Ashley Melson and Ashley Rivens will be recognized prior to the contest's tip-off which is slated for 3 p.m.
Georgia Southern (15-11, 10-7) and Davidson (10-16, 9-8) succeed each other in the conference standings. The Lady Eagles, who are in fourth place, hold a one game edge over the Wildcats who stand in fifth place.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles will look to bounce back from a 63-43 defeat against College of Charleston (Feb. 16) and hold off a regular season sweep by Davidson who edged Georgia Southern earlier this season. Meanwhile, Davidson also suffered a 78-67 loss to first place Samford last Monday, dropping to 9-8 in SoCon play.
The two teams are tied in the all-time series record at 17 games apiece, although the Wildcats currently boast a 10-game win streak over the Lady Eagles that dates back to 2003. The last time Georgia Southern defeated Davidson was in 2003 in a 62-57 decision on neutral soil. Earlier that season, the Lady Eagles tamed the Wildcats at Hanner with a 77-61 outcome.
Continuing to lead Georgia Southern this season in scoring is senior Melson (Newnan, Ga.) who averages 12.1 points per game. She is followed by teammate J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) with 9.8 points per contest, who is also leading the team with 5.6 rebounds per game. Senior Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) dishes out a team-high 2.4 assists per game.
Pacing the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding is two-time SoCon Player of the Week recipient Mercedes Robinson with 15.4 points per game and 10 rebounds per contest. She also leads the team in steals (2.0), while teammate Ashley Lax dishes out a team-best 3.7 assists per game.
Heading in to Saturday's contest, head coach Rusty Cram will look for his 200th career victory as he currently boasts an overall record of 199-175. Against Davidson, Coach Cram is 11-16. When hosting the Wildcats, the Lady Eagles are 8-8. Davidson is 4-9 overall on the road and 3-4 in road conference games.
