STATESBORO, GA ? Coming off a 6-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 14), the Georgia Southern women's tennis team opens Southern Conference play this weekend as they travel to North Carolina to take on Elon and UNC Greensboro, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
“We are excited to kick off our conference matches this weekend. Both are teams that we had close matches with last season falling 4-3 and 5-2. The team is really fired up to come out on top this year after losing two heartbreakers last season,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “I am looking to my seniors: Molly [Maddox], Emma [Knight] and Shea [Huxtable] to lead our team as we head into our Southern Conference matches.”
The Eagles (4-3) have taken road victories this season from Kennesaw State, Gardner-Webb and most recently, Bethune-Cookman. Last Saturday, Georgia Southern jumped out to an early advantage capturing the doubles point and cruising to five singles wins to secure a 6-1 victory.
Elon enters the match with a 4-4 overall record this season, claiming wins over North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State and Radford. The Phoenix are coming off a 5-2 defeat at Charlotte. Charlotte swept the doubles matches as Elon captured singles points at the one and three seeds, respectively, in the loss.
UNC Greensboro (0-2) is led by nationally ranked No. 69 Alejandro Guerra who became UNCG's highest ranked player in history earlier this season when she ranked 40th in the nation. The Spartans have competed in two road matches this season, dropping both at No. 18 North Carolina and No. 26 Florida State by 7-0 decisions.
In 2008, the Eagles dropped two tough decisions against the conference foes. In Statesboro, the Spartans took a close 5-2 decision over the Georgia Southern Eagles after sweeping the doubles point and four singles victories. Ali Beavers and Jessica Fuller were both victorious from the three and six seeds, respectively, for the Eagles. At Elon, the doubles point lifted the Phoenix past the Eagles as both teams traded three singles victories.
First serves on both Saturday, February 21, and Sunday at UNCG, are slated for 11 a.m.
