Eagles Set for First Road Trip of the Season

STATESBORO, GA ? Set for its first two road matches of the season, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team travels to Florida this weekend for contests against North Florida on Saturday, February 21, and Jacksonville University on Sunday. Off to one of the best starts to a season under the reign of head coach Justin Miles, the Eagles boast a 3-1 overall record to date.
“Road matches are always good for team bonding,” said Miles on taking his team on the road for the first time this season. “We get to know each other better and see how we compete on the road.”
Georgia Southern went on a three-match win streak to open its 2009 dual match schedule before dropping its first contest to Coastal Carolina (Feb. 13). The match decision came down to the last court as the Chanticleers won the doubles point, but the Eagles rebounded with three singles wins at the one, three and four seeds, respectively, evening the match score at 3-all. The last match on the court was at the No. 6 seed where freshman Edio Castanhel was taking on Chanticleer Joseph Withers. The Eagle dropped the first set, 7-5, but broke Withers in the second to take the set, 6-4, and push the match into a third set where the Chanticleer prevailed 6-0.
The Eagles will face two tough opponents this weekend to open their season on the road as North Florida is 2-2, while the Jacksonville Dolphins are 3-1. The Ospreys of North Florida claimed their first two matches of the season over Bethune-Cookman and Georgia State, before dropping the next two against Central Florida and Florida Atlantic. The Ospreys have been on a 19-day hiatus as their last two scheduled matches were postponed due to inclement weather. They reopen match play at home on Friday, hosting South Carolina State before welcoming Georgia Southern on Saturday.
Jacksonville University opened its season on a 3-match win streak before falling to Embry-Riddle (Feb. 12). The Dolphins won two tight contests to open their season at home as both matches over Georgia State and S.C. State were decided with 4-3 outcomes. JU continued its success on the road, notching a 6-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman before dropping a 4-1 decision at home to Embry-Riddle.
“It will be a fight in both matches this weekend as both our opponents are very good,” Miles said.
Last season, the Eagles were victorious over both weekend opponents. Georgia Southern opened its home season against North Florida, taking a 5-2 victory over the Ospreys. The Eagles then turned around in their second home match to face the Dolphins and took the win with a matching 5-2 decision.
First serve at the UNF Tennis Complex on Saturday is slated for 11 a.m., while first serve on Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
