Lady Eagles Travel North for UNC Asheville

STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern women's basketball team is prepared to close out this two-game road trip with a visit to UNC Asheville, Wednesday, December 16. Tip inside the Justice Center is set for 7 p.m. Following Wednesday night's game, the Lady Eagles return to the comforts of home in Hanner Fieldhouse for four straight beginning Saturday with Western Carolina.
Georgia Southern (4-4) is coming off a 76-45 routing of Mercer Friday night (December 11). Four Eagles posted double figures with 10 points each, all tying for the team-high. Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Candice Ivy (Roswell, Ga.) both recorded their first double figure scoring performances of the season, while Williams led the team in rebounding, tying her career-best of eight boards. Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) and J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) each added 10 points helping Georgia Southern improve to a .500 mark on the year.
For the year, the Eagles are led by Whitney who averages 11.3 points per game. Ogburn follows with 10.5 points on average and leads in rebounding, pulling down 5.9 boards per contest.
The Bulldogs of UNC Asheville enter Tuesday's contest carrying a 3-5 record after snapping a four-game losing streak with a 94-63 win over Southern Wesleyan (December 11). Junior forward Lindsey Montgomery scored a career-best 29 points, while collecting a career-high 20 rebounds. Montgomery was the first player to score over 20 points and pull down 20 boards in a game since Sheila Ford in 1983-84. Linda Aughburns added 17 points as Lindsey Thompson contributed 13.
Montgomery paces the Bulldogs on the year, recording 12.1 points per game on average. She is followed by Thompson who picks up 10.0 points on average. Montgomery also leads the team in rebounding, securing 9.1 boards on average.
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series over UNC Asheville, 2-0. The Lady Eagles defeated the Bulldogs during the 2008-09 season, 52-39, in Statesboro. It will be the first trip for GS to Asheville as the only other meeting occurred on neutral ground at the Lady Jags Round-Robin in Mobile, Ala. in 1990. Georgia Southern took the decision 107-60.
